This year, once again, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) celebrates the annual Day of the Seafarer (DotS) on 25 June, under the #SafetyTipsAtSea campaign.
For 2024, the #SafetyTipsAtSea campaign will look at seafarers’ contribution to making the maritime sector a safer workplace. To engage seafarers, IMO wants them to share their best safety tips at sea, whether it’s the gear they wear or the training they receive.
As part of the campaign, IMO is asking seafarers to share a picture of them in their working environment, highlighting how they keep their workplace safe.
The Day of the Seafarer (25 June) was established in a resolution adopted by the 2010 Diplomatic Conference in Manila to adopt the revised STCW Convention. Its stated purpose is to recognize the unique contribution made by seafarers from all over the world to international seaborne trade, the world economy and civil society as a whole.
The resolution “encourages Governments, shipping organizations, companies, shipowners and all other parties concerned to duly and appropriately promote the Day of the Seafarer and take action to celebrate it meaningfully”.
#SafetyTipsAtSea will be the new hashtag for the 2024 campaign.
The International Maritime Organization (IMO) invites participation in a campaign promoting safety at sea. Seafarers are encouraged to share a photo in their workplace along with their top safety tip, using the hashtag #SafetyTipsAtSea.
Seafarers are also encouraged to showcase safety equipment, specialized training, and efforts to enhance maritime safety and security while protecting the marine environment.
How to get involved:
- Seafarer organizations – share pictures of how your help seafarers stay safe;
- Wider public – show your appreciation for the work of seafarers and how their safety at sea is in the interest of all us.
Furthermore, the 4th edition of Crew Welfare Week, an industry initiative designed to acknowledge the pivotal role of seafarers in shipping, takes place June 25-27. This year’s 2024 Crew Welfare Awards ceremony also coincides with the IMO International Day of the Seafarer, presenting an opportunity to express our gratitude to all the wonderful people working onboard and ashore who form the heart of shipping.
