IMO STCW.7/Circ.19
IMO has issued Circular (STCW.7/Circ.19) providing guidelines on the medical examination of seafarers. The Guidelines aim to ensure that the standards of medical fitness forseafarers in the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification andWatchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW), 1978, as amended and the Seafarers’ Training,Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW) Code, are effectively implemented.
Seafarers are required to undergo medical examinations to reduce risks to other crewmembers and for the safe operation of the ship, as well as to safeguard their personal health andsafety. The MLC, 2006, and the STCW Convention, 1978, as amended, require a seafarer tohold a medical certificate, detail the information to be recorded and indicate certain specificaspects of fitness that need to be assessed.
