The International Harbour Masters Association (IHMA) now joins the IAPH’s program “World Ports Sustainability Program” as a partner. Through the program, women working in Harbor Master Divisions at the world’s ports, have the opportunity to be guided by some of the industry’s most experienced male and female professionals.
In the past, IHMA’s women members have shown their interest for the program, and are now in the procedure of matching them with senior mentors, involving members of their own Executive Committee.
The Women in Ports Mentoring Program sets out to empower high-potential women port professionals by linking them to expert mentors to expand their knowledge base and prepare them to take up operational roles in the smart ports of the future.
…as Jeanine Drummond, Harbour Master – Newcastle & Yamba said.
By bringing high-potential women port professionals closer with experienced seniors, both male and female will be benefited in their personal career, as they will share their experiences at work and they provide advice, focusing in port operations.
The idea of the “Women in Ports Mentoring” program was presented last May, when the IAPH Women’s Forum announced a planned meeting with representatives from all member ports. With the program running until March-April 2020, mentors and mentees will provide resources, education, training and tools.
Women working in Harbor Master Divisions by entering in the program, are also able to use a system which connects women’s port professionals online with both male and female mentors, who are principally involved in port operations, the system is introduced as “Mentorloop”. It can also be used in a weekly basis to exchange common interest recommendations and tips.
It’s really nice to able to connect with someone who shares the same job and challenges.
…noted a trainee pilot in Sydney and Botany Bay, Jacqui Kenyon, which uses Mentorloop.
For the records, IAPH is a non-profit-making global alliance of 170 ports and 140 port-related organisations covering 90 countries. Its member ports handle more than 60 percent of global maritime trade and around 80 percent of world container traffic. While, the International Harbour Masters’ Association (IHMA), develops and fosters collaboration and good relations among harbour masters worldwide.
Concluding, the “Women in Ports Mentoring” program was one of the nominees for the Career4Sea Europort Awards in the “Women in Shipping” category.
