South Korean shipbuilder Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., the world’s largest shipbuilding company, announced that it has received a cyber security certificate from the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) for one of its very large crude carriers (VLCCs). This was the first time in the world that the company received the Cyber Security Ready (CSR) for a VLCC.
The certification refers to a cyber security technology by HHI that prevents cyber security threats inside and outside of ships. Paul R. Walters, director of the Global ABS CyberSafety program, said this Cyber Security Ready (CSR) model is a powerful tool for protecting marine assets from various threats.
As a global leader in marine cyber security, ABS is pleased to be working with HHI to ensure the next generation of vessels is better equipped to address the increased level of cyber risk they will certainly face,”
…Mr. Walters was quoted as saying by Yonhap news agency.
Hyundai Heavy said it is set to deliver the vessel to an unidentified European shipping firm later this month.
The shipbuilder has shown an increased interest in smart technologies in the last years. During SMM, Lloyd’s Register announced a cooperation project with the company, to explore the value of blockchain when applied to shipbuilding. Blockchain can enable the industry to make sure that project planning and initial designing work are more efficient.
