Helle Hammer, Managing Director in Cefor (The Nordic Association of Marine Insurers), has been awarded the LeaderShip Award 2019 by WISTA Norway. She was presented with the award in light of her important work in shaping the future of marine insurance as well as being a role model for women in the male-dominated shipping industry.
Ms Hammer has spoken to SAFETY4SEA’s Career Paths Column, where she highlighted that working with the Nordic Marine Insurance market was a startling moment for her career.
The award was presented at WISTA’s ‘Waves of change’ conference during Nor-Shipping, in Oslo Norway June 5, 2019.
Ms Hammer was nominated by Lloyd’s as one of the most influential women in shipping in 2018; she was ranked as number 8 on the list of ‘Top 10 women in shipping’.
Since 2007, Helle Hammer has headed up Cefor, based in Norway. She leads Cefor’s work of lobbying the maritime insurance industry’s interests on both national and international level, including that of IMO (International Maritime Organization).

Helle represents Cefor in external forums such as DNV Council, stakeholder committees in Bureau Veritas, RINA (Registro Italiano Navale) & DNV GL, and as a Board member of the Norwegian Maritime Forum.
In addition, before joining Cefor, Helle was the Director of Innovation Norway’s Houston office. She has more than 20 years of experience from politics and industry policies, including four years as State Secretary in the Norwegian Ministries of Trade & Industry and Finance, and six years with the Norwegian Shipowners’ Association.
Since 2012, she has been the chair of the International Union of Marine Insurance’s (IUMI’s) Policy Forum, tasked with the responsibility of identifying, monitoring and proposing any framework related actions to support and protect the interests of the global marine insurance industry.
