The containership Gustav Maersk was refloated after it grounded while transiting in the Strait of Messina, Southern Italy.
The 9,000 teu ship departed from Rijeka, Croatia and was en route to Gioia Tauro in Italy when it suffered a mechanical failure and grounded nearby the village Torre Cavallo early in the morning of January 10.
Luckily, there was neither injuries nor oil spill reported.
Furthermore, three tugs from the ports of Milazzo and Messina set the vessel free, which finally sailed to the port of Gioia Tauro with two tugs in assistance.
An investigation into the cause of the incident is currently underway by the Italian Coast guard.
