According to reports, Transocean Winner which has 280 tonnes of diesel onboard ran aground on the west coast of the Isle of Lewis on Monday morning while it was being towed from Norway to Malta, due to heavy seas.
Pollution specialists together with the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) monitored surrounding seas and the inspections revealed that two fuel tanks of the grounded rig have ruptured and the Transocean Winner is leaking oil.
At the time of the incident there were no personnel on board the oil rig. However, according to the Smit Salvage, it yet is unclear how much oil from those tanks has been released to the environment.
Furthermore, the rig is said to be in the original position. Unfortunatelly the severe weather conditions at the site hamper the UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency’s action to continue the assessment.
