The fire occurred suddenly but crew managed to extinguish it quickly
A fire on an Isle of Man ferry started because of a griddle in the galley, the Steam Packet company has confirmed.It happened on 29 August when the Ben-my-Chree was travelling from Heysham to Douglas.
Liverpool coastguard was alerted to the incident, while passengers were asked to congregate in the lounge area.Steam Packet Chief Executive Mark Woodward said an investigation later made it clear the fire had started because of the griddle.
He added: “The fire occurred suddenly, but was dealt with using CO2 fire extinguishers and fire blankets by the working fire party.”Although it was a relatively small fire, we treat any such incident seriously and have well-drilled procedures in place.
“The staff involved reacted immediately and I’d like to thank them for their efforts. They managed to extinguish it quickly.”A company spokesman said the Ben-my-Chree arrived in Douglas on schedule where the Fire and Rescue Service carried out onboard checks.The vessel later left Douglas for the evening sailing back to Heysham.
