The Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH) is launching its second round of preliminary investigations of offshore wind farm sites on February 1. Three areas are being investigated on which wind turbines will be operating from 2027 and 2028 onwards. The three areas are located in the German Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of the North Sea.
According to BSH, in the following years the Agency plans to continue or commission studies focusing on the marine environment and the subsoil on wind, waves and other oceanographic parameters.
Under the results of its investigation, BSH checks if the areas are suitable for the construction of offshore wind farms.

In the first place, the Agency decides the subject matter and the scope of the investigations for the examinations in the areas. Therefore, until March 4, 2019, authorities, associations, companies and the public are invited to comment on the planned investigations.
On March 20, the concept for the investigations will be presented and discussed in a hearing date.
After that, the BSH will pass the new information about the areas to the Federal Network Agency that will determine who will set up wind turbines.
Yet, the results from the preliminary investigation will be available to the potential bidders in advance. They work as the basis for the compilation of the bids and the planning of the wind farms.
Also:
- The area N-7.2, on which a wind farm is scheduled to be commissioned in 2027, has a size of approximately 52 km2. It is located about 82 km north of Borkum;
- N-3.5 is located about 50 km north of the island Borkum and has a size of about 26 km2;
- N-3.6 that is also located 50 km north of the island Borkum, has a size of approximately 32 km2.
Concluding, from 2028, wind turbines will generate electricity in these areas.
