According to local sources, four more crewmembers of the container ship MSC Gayane have been charged in connection with the discovery of 15.5 tonnes of cocaine on board.
The sources couldn’t reveal more information on the crew members due to the fact that the investigation continues.
Two individuals have already pleaded guilty. Charging documents for one of the defendants, indicate that prosecutors have reason to believe that the chief officer and the ship’s electrician were also involved in the scheme.
Concluding, U.S. Attorney William M. McSwain highlighted that the seizure aboard the Gayane was the largest ever in the region and one of the biggest in U.S. history. He estimated the value of the drugs at more than $1 billion.
