A total investment of €422 million, allocated through the Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Facility (AFIF), will support initiatives aimed at accelerating the decarbonization of the transport network.
As announced, nine ports will be equipped with onshore power installations, enabling docked ships to run on cleaner energy sources instead of conventional fuels. In addition, two ammonia and methanol bunkering facilities will be developed to provide sustainable fuel alternatives for maritime transport.
To remind, the European Union Council has adopted the alternative fuels infrastructure regulation (AFIR) which establishes, among other things, that maritime ports must provide shore-side electricity for vessels by 2030.
Selected projects will also focus on developing hydrogen refueling stations and electrifying airports.
