Beginning 26 March, the European Union ports suspended transshipping liquefied natural gas (LNG) produced in or exported from Russia.
The ban also extends to technical support, brokerage services, financing, and other forms of financial assistance. These sanctions, which were adopted in June 2024, are now coming into effect after a deferral period that ended on 25 March 2025.
However, EU member states may permit LNG transshipment if it is intended for their own energy needs.
Additionally, the sanctions prevent EU countries from providing technical support, brokerage services, and financing for transshipment activities. Similar to previous sanctions, the import ban aims to undermine Putin’s ability to finance the war in Ukraine.
