Classification Society DNV GL issued the importance of new modern classification, driving safety and digitalization solutions in the framework of today’s tough maritime market at their press conference at Posidonia trade fair,on Tuesday.
Showcasing the challenging role that innovation and digital development play in shipping industry, DNV GL’s group President and CEO Remi Eriksen said that
“It is more important to innovate than know.DNV GL is progressing well.We drive many joint development projects,sharing the inshight gained with both industries and authorities.”
“However, the needs of maritime customers have grown rapidly as well.Therefore, it is a challenging time.It’s time for innovation and technology can solve many challenges in order to enhance safety, efficiency and environmental parts in shipping”, he added
Knut Orbeck – Nilssen,CEO of DNV GL pointed out a number of examples of how DVN GL is working with innovation challenges and modern class solutions development.Among them the use of drones for conducting surveys inside ship tanks.DNV GL is the first classification society to complete production surveys using a drone.
As far as digitalization is concerned, DNV GL highlighted the use of data platforms in a smart way in order to make sure that customers manage classification needs simply, transparently and quickly from their vessels or fleet.A new joint development project with NYK Line and MAN Diesel & Turbo is developing a working prototype of a scalable common maritime data center,with the aim to make data available to the relevant stakeholders.
Additionally DNV GL, has a management plan for cyber security theats.The Greek shipping organizationTsakos Group of Companies partnered DNV GL to assist in preparing a cyber security management system which will provide a comprehensive framework for assessing cyber vulnerabilities.DNV GL is the first classification society to put this kind of cybersecurity servise into practice.
Taking the foresaid and the 100 year relationship with Greece as well into consideration ,DNV GL is planning measures to enhance services to the Greek shipping.
“Many of our customers are at home in Greece and so we are making Greece our third home market”said Ioannis Chiotopoulos,Regional Manager South-Eastt Europe & Middle East.
Last but not least, at the close of the conference DNV GL honoured three engineers for their innovative scientific research offering the DNV GL Award for Young Professionals and 1000 euros to each of them.The prize in the category “Safer” went to Aleksei Alekseev,participant in the Erasmus Mundus Masters Programme in Advanced Ship Design for his master thesis”Numerical Simulation of ice ridge breaking”.The prize in the category “Smarter” went to Isa Duran graduate of the Danish Technical University for his paper ” Total cost of ownership” and finally the third award in the category ” Greener” went to Victor Bolbot for his thesis ” Optimization of ship’s bow for added resistance in waves”.
Later, DNV GL and Prisma Electronics signed a partnership agreement on fleet performance management.Prisma Electronics and DNV GL have been working together over the last six months.Prisma’s LAROS system is a n innovative patented platform that provides wireless onboard data for vessel performance management.
“By working with such a reliable remote condition monitoring supplier as Prisma Electronics, we can provide shipping companies with a complete overview of their fleet. Our cooperation ensures there are no blind spots in our customer’s fleet performance management.” said Ioannis Chiotopoulos, Regional Manager South-East Europe & Middle East at DNV GL Maritime.
