On 22 August, the Danish Crown Prince, Prime Minister and Climate, Energy & Utilities Minister inaugurated the ‘Horns Rev 3’ offshore wind farm, the largest in Scandinavia and one of the most powerful in the world.
Located about 25-40 km off the west coast of Jutland in the North Sea, the 407 MW wind farm is expected to boost Danish wind energy production by 12%.
Horns Rev 3 will generate around 1,700 GWh annually, thereby increasing Danish electricity generation from wind by around 12%.
This is expected to provide enough power to cover the consumption of the equivalent of around 425,000 Danish households.
Swedish power firm Vattenfall which owns the wind farm won with a bid worth DKK 770/MWh (€103/MWh).
The Danish Government is paying Vattenfall the difference between this and the electricity price for the first 12 years of the project. That makes Horns Rev 3 one of the cheapest operational offshore wind farms in Europe.
Denmark is already a leader in wind energy. It gets more of its electricity from wind than any other country in Europe: 41% last year. This new wind farm will increase Danish wind energy production by 12%. And it’s an important step to Denmark realising its goal of 100% renewable electricity by 2030,
