Namely, MaRITeC-X project will focus on marine and shipping research and innovation, aiming to set out the CMMI in Cyprus. As Deputy Minister of Shipping Natasa Pilides said, this centre of excellence can provide many economic and social benefits to Cyprus and can also promote the country’s energy plans.
Moreover, efforts are being for the project to receive EU funds, as this is a very important aspect for the development of the shipping complex. For his part, Rector of the University of Cyprus Constantinos Christofides stated that even if the EU does not fund the project, Cyprus should.
Commenting on the occasion, MIT’s Nicholas Makris noted that Cyprus’s shipping and a new offshore industry has big potentials, as its offshore territory is much larger than its land mass.
Finally, Larnaca Mayor Andreas Vyras mentioned that this project aims not to create another academic institution, but instead assist the real economy through systematic research.
