On October 2, 2024, at approximately 12:40 AM, the Malta-flagged container ship “CMA CGM Balboa” collided with the COMPAS port facility in Barranquilla, Colombia.
According to local news outlet, El Escpectador, the vessel was carrying 2,720 tons of cargo when it encountered mechanical failures in its main machinery, leading to a loss of control and the subsequent accident at kilometer 10 of the access channel.
Maritime authorities quickly activated emergency protocols in response to the incident. Four tugboats were dispatched to assist the ship, ensuring it was safely towed to its designated port facility.
The Captain of the Barranquilla port, confirmed that the emergency situation has been resolved and emphasized that the mechanical failures are currently under investigation. Authorities are working to determine the cause of the malfunction that led to this incident.
