Windcoop has officially announced the launch of the construction of the world’s first sail-powered container ship, at the RMK Marine shipyard.
The ship will measure 91.3 meters in length and will be propelled by three rigid wings, each measuring 350 m², designed by CWS – Computed Wing Sail. This design is expected to reduce CO₂ emissions by 60% compared to conventional cargo ships.
As informed, the project stands out not only for its technological advancements but also for its unique funding model. Over 1,600 citizen shareholders have contributed, alongside key shippers such as Arcadie SA, VALRHONA, PROVA, and ETHIQUABLE. Impact-driven financial partners, including La Nef, SIDI, Mer Invest, and others, have also supported the initiative.
To date, €6.8 million has been raised in equity, with the total project valued at €28.5 million.
The first route will connect France with Madagascar, including ports in Tamatave, Diego Suarez, and Majunga. Windcoop is already studying the construction of a second ship to ensure monthly service and is exploring new routes to further expand its environmental and social impact.
