As a matter of fact, trying something new helps us break the monotony of routine. Specifically, stepping out of your comfort zone gives you true passion, purpose and power. However, one thing is for sure, until you try something new in life, you will never know if you could do it better.
Trying new things is paramount to being a successful person, building a complete human—one that you will be proud of. In fact, trying new things not only helps us extinguish our fears, but it also allows us to expand our minds and learning.
Speaking of fears, the reason why we hold ourselves back from trying new things is the fear of the “unknown”. According to Alex Lickerman M.D, former Director of Primary Care at the University of Chicago:
The real reason I resist trying new things and prefer routine is fear (what else?)—fear of the unknown. Studies suggest we fear an unknown outcome more than we do a known bad one.
“Opening our minds to a new thing or a new way of thinking is often frightening because by definition it’s unfamiliar. Unfamiliarity often rings the alarm bell “danger—potentially unsafe.” But if you think about it, most of the things we fear don’t actually come to pass. What’s more, we’re often unable to anticipate the good things that do occur as a result of our trying something new”.
As explained, even the most routine-loving people can become bored if they’re not continually challenged in some way. As a result, new challenges may represent my greatest opportunities for personal growth.
Here are four important reasons to try new things regularly:
Meet new people
When you surround yourself with the same people, ideas, routines, and conversations, you are unexposed. By expanding your social network, you are open to countless opportunities that grow you, your career, and knowledge and establish your spot in the world.
Grow as a person
Growth seems to require us to take new action first, whether it’s adopting a new attitude or a new way of thinking, or literally taking new action. Thrusting yourself into new situations and leaving yourself there alone, so to speak, often forces beneficial change.
Overcome Fear
Some level of fear is always present when trying something new, but you’ll soon realize that your mind exaggerates things. Eventually, once you make it a priority to try new things, fear will cease to be a minor factor in your life.
Gain experiences
Because life is short, you don’t want to waste it doing the same things. Having new experiences is therapeutic to your mind and body. Do not limit yourself and just go for it.
Real change is difficult at the beginning, but gorgeous at the end. Change begins the moment you get the courage and step outside your comfort zone; change begins at the end of your comfort zone.- Roy T. Bennett.
