The Med MoU involves ten Member States: Algeria, Cyprus, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Malta, Morocco, Tunisia and Turkey. In this rather busy maritime area, there are three important crossings for the world trade: the Suez canal, connecting Indian Ocean/red sea; the Gibraltar straight, connecting Atlantic ocean and the Dardanelles and Bosporus, connecting Black sea.
The analysis below reveals that Med MoU may be considered as a relevant strict PSC area, having a global Detention Rate for the last three years at 2.85% and Deficiencies per Inspection at 2.62.
As shown on the graph below, the distribution of detentions, based on the number of deficiencies, demonstrates that mainly underperforming vessels detained in this regime, given that the majority of detentions, as marked in inspections, resulted in more than 10 deficiencies.
