The Canadian government has announced a CAD 35.5 million ($25 million) investment to support the development of shore power projects in British Columbia.
As announced, the funding has been allocated to Seaspan Ferries, the Greater Victoria Harbour Authority, and the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority as part of the Clean Ports stream of the Green Shipping Corridor Program.
The funding will be distributed as follows:
Seaspan Ferries will receive up to CAD 6.4 million to implement shore power systems at four terminals.
The initiative is seeking to implement shore power equipment at four Seaspan terminals (in Delta, Nanaimo, North Saanich, and Surrey) and make associated upgrades to four commercial vehicle roll-on/roll-off ferries operating between these terminals.
The Greater Victoria Harbour Authority will receive up to CAD 22.5 million for a shore power project at the Ogden Point cruise terminal.
The project aims to implement shore power equipment at the Ogden Point cruise terminal in support of the Greater Victoria Harbour Authority’s participation in an initiative to establish a green cruise corridor on the west coast.
The Vancouver Fraser Port Authority will receive up to CAD 6.6 million to upgrade shore power infrastructure at the Canada Place cruise terminal.
The project is looking to upgrade shore power infrastructure at the Canada Place cruise terminal to increase the availability and accessibility of shore power for cruise ships. This supports the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority’s participation in establishing a green cruise corridor on the west coast.
To remind, in November 2024, the Canadian government announced funding of up to $30 million for three green shipping corridor projects based in Quebec. The funding was aimed at initiatives that reduce the environmental impacts of the marine sector.
