BG Group is helping to develop major international initiatives to tackle key climate change issues in collaboration with other leading oil and gas companies.
The company aims to be part of the solution in meeting global energy demand while addressing the critical challenge, for society and our industry, of climate change and the transition to lower carbon energy.
Helge Lund, Chief Executive, said, “It is clear there is no simple solution to climate change or formula to the transition to lower carbon energy. The scale of collaboration required is virtually unprecedented, but we are committed to being proactive and play our part. We are helping lead global initiatives which make commitments on key climate change challenges such as managing methane emissions, eliminating routine flaring, advocating for a price on carbon, promoting the role for natural gas, and collaborating with oil and gas peers to share best practice and act together. We are taking clear steps to improve the energy efficiency of our operations as well as contributing to a lower carbon energy mix by driving industry action.”
BG Group has added its voice to an industry statement calling for a price on carbon
Early this month, major oil and gas companies, BG Group, BP, Eni, Shell, Statoil and Total, announced their call to governments around the world and to the UNFCCC to introduce carbon pricing systems and create clear, stable, ambitious policy frameworks that could eventually connect national systems. Since 2012, BG Group has advocated for a global price on carbon in our Climate Change Public Position. Co-signing the carbon pricing industry statement adds strength to this position.
BG Group supports the World Bank ‘Zero Routine Flaring by 2030’ initiative
BG Group is supporting the World Bank ‘Zero Routine Flaring by 2030’ initiative to eliminate routine gas flaring at operated oil production sites by 2030. Environment and Climate Change Standard already stipulates that company’s operations do not flare continuously, except when required for safety reasons. Joining this initiative, however, enables BG Group to demonstrate leadership through practical programmes which, if adopted by others, would lead to material decarbonisation in our sector.
BG Group is a founding member of the Climate and Clean Air Coalition Oil and Gas Methane Partnership
BG Group is a founding member of the CCAC Oil and Gas Methane Partnership which aims to help participating oil and gas companies improve understanding and management of their methane emissions, helping to secure a long-term role for natural gas.
BG Group is a founding member of the Oil and Gas Climate Initiative
The Oil and Gas Climate Initiative aims to catalyse practical action on climate change through best practice sharing and collaboration amongst its eight member companies.
As this initiative covers the full spectrum on what the industry is doing to address climate change, it provides a platform for joined-up thinking and action on oil and gas industry greenhouse gas emissions management and the transition to lower carbon energy.
BG Group commitments recognised by the UNFCCC
BG Group has recently been recognised by the UNFCCC through the Non-state Actor Zone for Climate Action website for its commitments to climate change action, specifically its target to reduce operational CO2e emissions intensity by 10% from 2012 to 2017.
