NORDEN and BHP have entered into a lower CO2 emission biofuel arrangement for approximately 1,000 tonnes of 100% biofuel (B100) to be used on a voyage from Hay Point, Australia to Rotterdam, Netherlands on the Capesize vessel NORD Steel.
According to the company, this will be the largest quantity of biofuel used on a single voyage by NORDEN, anticipated to reduce a total of 2,500 tonnes of CO2 emissions compared to an equivalent voyage using conventional fossil maritime fuel – equivalent to removing 543 fossil-fueled vehicles off the roads for a year.
BHP’s Head of Maritime, Sarah Greenough, stated that since their first biofuel trial in 2021, BHP had introduced biofuel blends into the fuel mix for selected voyages on their major shipping routes. She expressed delight in working with partners like NORDEN to consume biofuel as part of their efforts towards decarbonising supply chain emissions.
Jan Rindbo, CEO of NORDEN, mentioned that BHP was taking a leading role in accelerating the decarbonisation of shipping, and they were proud of the trust BHP had placed in them to support efforts to lower supply chain emissions.
To remind, in May 2024, Norden completed Singapore’s first-ever 100% biofuel (B100) bunkering. After successfully trialing a B24/VLSFO blend on the Panamax vessel NORD TAURUS, Norden was entrusted by vessel owner ITOCHU Corporation to carry out the historic B100 bunkering.
