AMSA reminds that from 13 December 2018, all certificates issued for a vessel survey, Exemption 2 – non-survey and Exemption 40-class C restricted, no longer include the name of the certificate holder.
These certificates and exemptions allow a vessel to operate commercially in Australia. However, they do not provide proof of title, ownership of a vessel or an operator’s competence to operate a vessel. To remove any confusion, AMSA does no longer publishes the certificate holder’s name on the certificate.

If an operator needs evidence of ownership, beyond their proof of purchase or bill of sale, a ship can be registered on the Australian General Shipping Register.
Under Australian law operators must tell if they sell or transfer ownership of a vessel. AMSA also uses this information to send survey reminders and other correspondence. Operators can make these changes via amsa.gov.au:
- Domestic commercial vessels: Complete an application to vary a certificate or approval;
- Australian registered vessels: Complete an application for transfer of ownership or transmission of ownership.
