The Port of Shanghai will collaborate with the Port of Ningbo to develop the northern part of southeast China’s Xiao Yangshan port area. Namely, Shanghai International Port Group (SIPG) and Zhejiang Seaport Investment & Operation Group, the operators of the two ports, agreed on the development scheme.
The move aims to advance the efficiency of cargo transit on the Yangtze River and lead to lower costs, local media reported.

Currently, up to 70% of Shanghai port’s throughput derives from the Yangtze River Delta, while about half of the goods in Yangshan need extra transportation by water.
According to Zhou Dequan, a researcher with the Shanghai International Shipping Institute, the development of the northern Xiao Yangshan will provide many benefits to such an integration in various levels.
The collaboration between the two operators will also set out opportunities for more collaboration across the region, Mr. Zhou explained.
The Port of Shanghai is currently the world’s largest port by TEU volume, with the Port of Ningbo being the world’s largest port by cargo turnover.
