Latest information reports that more than a hundred containers fell off MV Zim Kingston. The earlier number reported was 40.
Providing an update on the fire that started aboard the container vessel MV Zim Kingston, Canada’s Coast Guard informed that the blaze is now under control.
As fo now there has not been any report of casualties or injuries. Currently, with the fire in control, the Zim Kingston crew members maanged to enter container bays, with sources reporting that 106 containers have fallen overboard, instead of 40. Two of these containers had hazardous goods.
Furthermore, Transport Canada authorities and inspectors will inspect MV Zim Kingston and direct it to a port to unload and for additional inspections if any.
When the fire started, sixteen members of the crew were safely evacuated, while five seafarers remained onboard to tackle the fire, along with a fire extinguishing and salvage agency.
After the incident, DANAOS Shipping managers of Zim Kingston, received permission by the Canadian Coast Guard to allow the boarding of technical experts from the company as well as two marine firefighters.
Reporting on the containers, the Canadian Coast Guard located four on the shore near Cape Scott. The containers have been identified, referenced against the ship manifest, and do not contain hazardous chemicals.
It appears that at least one of the containers, containing refrigerators, has broken open. Unified Command has provided this information to the ship’s owner who has hired a contractor to recover the containers
stated the Canadian Coast Guard.
Mariners, aircraft and members of the public in the area are asked to report any sightings of containers and are reminded to avoid opening or moving containers as two of the 109 containers contain hazardous chemicals.
