The Hong Kong Marine Department issued a merchant shipping information note to share lessons learned of a man overboard fatality involving a Hong Kong-registered bulk carrier. The deceased was under the influence of alcohol when he went overboard.
Cyprus’ Marine Accident Investigation Committee (MAIC) announced that the investigation of the man overboard fatality from the container ship ‘Elb Trader’ in the Port of Dublin, South Ireland, in January 2018 is still ongoing. France, Cyprus, Italy and Tunisia are jointly involved in the investigation.
The Australian transportation Safety Bureau (ATSB) announced that the investigation into the loss of containers overboard from YM Efficiency, off Newcastle, on 1st June 2018, is continuing. The investigation is currently in the examination and analysis phase.

Crewmembers of the Carnival Fascination managed to rescue a man that went overboard on May 18. As Carnival informs, the passenger had jumped from Deck 10, with the crew and passengers immediately notifying the bridge team of the incident. Once informed of the incident, the bridge team returned the vessel to the location of the incident. The captain then deployed a rescue boat, with the crew bringing the victim back onboard.
Transport Malta’s Marine Safety Investigation Unit issued an investigation report on a man overboard incident involving the Maltese-registered bulk carrier ‘Seastar Endeavour’ in the North Sea Deep Water Route, on 20 May. No crew member had witnessed the accident and the man was never found.
On May 19, Maersk Patras reported a man overboard in the Saint Lawrence River. Search and rescue operation started but it was unsuccessful and has now been called off. Namely, the 2nd Officer of the vessel Maersk Patras fell overboard into the Saint Lawrence River (Canada) north east of the junction with Saguenay River.
In its monthly safety scenario for May, the Swedish Club described a case of a serious injury during a man overboard drill, which left a crew member disabled for life. The Monthly Safety Scenario seeks to assist operators to comply with international safety regulations.
The US Coast Guard suspended the search for a missing Royal Caribbean Majesty of the Seas cruise ship crewmember 37 miles east of Hillsboro Inlet. Namely, a crewmember from the Royal Caribbean Majesty of the Seas cruise ship had gone overboard. Crews searched for approximately 24 hours covering 1,388 square miles.
The US Coast Guard announced that it is searching from January 24, for an overboard crewmember from the Royal Caribbean Majesty of the Seas cruise ship. The crewmember went overboard 37 miles east of Hillsboro Inlet. The USCG deployed the cutter Paul Clark, a US Coast Guard Air Station Miami MH-65 Dolphin helicopter, and an Air Station Miami HC-144 Ocean Sentry airplane.
