Anemos, the world’s largest sailing cargo ship, has set sail on its inaugural voyage from Concarneau, South Brittany.
The vessel, created by TransOceanic Wind Transport (TOWT) and constructed by the PIRIOU shipyard, is expected to reach Le Havre early next week. Following loading, Anemos will head to New York City, with an estimated arrival around August 20, 2024.
The arrival of Anemos marks a significant milestone in the maritime sector. This state-of-the-art vessel, which is 81 meters in length, 15 meters in width, and 63 meters in height, is the first of eight anticipated sailing cargo ships.
Equipped with advanced sail technology derived from ocean racing and automated rigging, Anemos seeks to revolutionize shipping by minimizing its environmental footprint.
The vessel’s primary mode of propulsion will be wind power, which is predicted to lower CO2 emissions by up to 100% and drastically reduce other pollutants such as sulfur oxides and nitrogen oxides. This shift to sailing promises to have a lower impact on biodiversity and ocean acidification than traditional engine-powered vessels.
