Trafigura and CF Industries have successfully completed the world’s first co-loaded ammonia and propane shipment.
In January, the Green Power Medium Gas Carrier (MGC) transported ammonia from CF Industries and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) in separate tanks from the US to Europe. As explained, co-loading is a key step in scaling up low-emission fuel availability, supporting industries like coal co-firing and the marine shipping sector’s transition to lower-carbon alternatives.
We transport LPG and ammonia from the US to Europe on similar ships on a regular basis. We can improve the economics for our customers and reduce emissions with fewer voyages by safely co-loading Ammonia and LPG in the same vessel.
… commented Patricio Norris, Global Head of Ammonia and LPG for Trafigura.
Ammonia from CF Industries’ Louisiana plant and LPG from Corpus Christi, Texas, were loaded onto the vessel. Strict safety and segregation measures were implemented, and the shipment proceeded after regulatory approval and a thorough risk assessment. LPG was discharged in the Mediterranean for heating, while ammonia was delivered to Tees Port for CF Fertilisers UK.
This achievement builds on Trafigura’s first ship-to-ship ammonia transfer in 2024 and highlights the industry’s progress toward adopting low-carbon fuels, supported by CF Industries’ upcoming carbon capture project set to begin in 2025.
Ammonia is safely transported around the world by vessels daily, and this voyage reinforces the flexibility we have to serve emerging low-carbon ammonia demand as we innovate shipping methods with industry-leaders such as Trafigura.
