In this video, female EMSA colleagues share their experiences in the context of the IMO’s ‘Empowering women in the maritime community’ theme for 2019. As Manuela Tomassini, Lawyer, said: ‘Excellence is not linked to gender, but opportunities need to be equal’.
This year, as always, the annual Day of the Seafarer (DotS) will be celebrated on 25 June. Throughout 2019 there will be a strong emphasis on the importance and value of women within the professional ranks.

This year, the campaign hashtag is: #IAmOnBoard. The hashtag can be used by anyone taking part in the campaign, male or female, to show their solidarity for gender equality in seafaring.
In addition, a more specific and targeted element of the overall campaign will be ‘Make one change’.
Namely, IMO will invite campaign participants to think about what they would do if they were able to make just one change to improve diversity in seafaring.
Speaking about their experiences on board, several EMSA female colleagues said that there should be equal opportunities for both genders in the shipping industry, as excellence is not linked to gender.
They specifically call women to follow their dreams and say that with the right tools they can achieve anything.
