School of Computing at Robert Gordon University’s, funded by The Data Lab, latest successful collaboration with DNV GL, uses Machine Learning to create a fully automated solution to analyse and process complex engineering drawings.
The ‘Images to Data’ project is a collaboration between DNV GL and the School of Computing at Robert Gordon University, aiming to develop advanced techniques in processing and analysing large volumes of scanned images of engineering drawings to generate data in a tabulated form.

This is considered as a great example where lab research activities in the area of machine vision, machine learning and data analytics are applied to real-life business problems that are technically demanding and challenging.
Commenting on the collaboration, Brian Bain Ph.D., Senior Principal Specialist, Safety Risk Excellence, DNV GL Limited, said:
Engineering has a vast amount of data, but it is not always used at its full potential. It takes quite a lot of time to extract the information from some documents. We are looking for a more efficient way of getting this information from paper copies into a more electronic format.
