The video, produced by Celebrity Cruises, presents Captain Kate McCue, the first American woman to command a cruise ship. Captain McCue shares how she decided to follow this traditionally male-dominated career path, her experiences onboard and the interaction with passengers and other crew onboard.
Currently, only 2% of the world’s seafarers are women and Celebrity Cruises has shed focus on increasing its gender equality onboard. About 22% of celebrity Cruises bridge crew is now made up from women.
We continue to increase the number of women, we continue to recruit, we are not stopping at 22%. I would like to get into the mid-30s. I am not sure if we ever get to 50%, because the talent pool is not there yet,
…said Lisa Lutoff-Perlo, President and CEO of Celebrity Cruises.
On the occasion of the International Women’s Day on 8 March, “Celebrity Edge” set sail with an all-female bridge and hotel officer team for the first time in the history of shipping. In fact, the cruise vessel started its seven-day journey on 8 March 2020, with 27 women from 16 different countries onboard, including Capt. McCue at the helm.
I look forward to the day when it’s not a female captain, it’s just captain,
…notes Captain McCue.
