Due to the International Women’s Day 2019, IMO highlights the position of women in the maritime sector. IMO launches a video trailer for a forthcoming film which will showcase success stories of how IMO’s Women in Maritime programme has positively affected women in ports, on the shoreside and on ships. A series of profiles of individual women also launched on March 8, aiming to inspire the next generation.
The trailer and profiles were unveiled to delegates to the Sub-Committee on Ship Systems and Equipment meeting and IMO staff, who gathered to celebrate International Women’s Day.
IMO’s World Maritime Day theme is ‘Empowering Women in the Maritime Community‘, giving particular resonance to this year’s International Women’s Day celebrations.
IMO’s global theme in favour of women is ‘Think equal, build smart, innovate for change‘. It focuses on innovative ways according to which gender equality and women empowerment can be advanced, in support of the UN Sustainable Development Goal 5.
Moreover, IMO supports that is in favour of gender equality and women’s progress in the maritime sector, even by launching a new logo for its ‘Women In Maritime’ project.
IMO’s Women in Maritime programme has, over the past three decades, helped women reach leadership positions in the maritime sector and bring a much-needed gender balance to the industry by giving them access to high-level technical training.
