The Icelandic Coast Guard rescued the stranded containership Lagarfoss, which experienced a malfunction in the main engine, leaving the ship adrift.
The coast guard currently has the ship under tow. The containership is expected to reach Reykjavik, Iceland on December 31.
The vessel left from Reykjavik on December 25, heading to Halifax, Canada. After two days, the ship was about 230 nautical miles south west of Iceland, when it experienced a main engine malfunction that left the ship adrift.
The Icelandic Coast Guard received a request for assistance and deployed one of its patrol boats.
The crew of the containership tried to repair the engine, but without success. Then, the owner Eimskip requested that the Coast Guard tow the vessel.
A patrol ship arrived in the are of the incident on December 29, successfuly attaching a tow line. The tow is expected to last two days.
According to the Icelandic Coast Guard, the weather is good ithe crew aboard the Lagarfoss is safe. It also informed that the trip is going very well.
