The Singapore-flagged cargo ship “MILDRED,” loaded with 85,000 tons of iron ore from Uruguay, ran aground on 23 October at the entrance of the Ereğli Iron and Steel Factories port in Zonguldak, Turkey.
According to various local news outlets, following the incident, ERDEMİR’s pilot ships conducted an initial inspection and promptly reported the situation to the Karadeniz Ereğli Port Authority. In response to the grounding, the Port Authority implemented a closure of the port to incoming cargo vessels to ensure safety and facilitate salvage operations.
Once divers conducted their assessments, salvage efforts commenced, and the vessel was successfully refloated shortly thereafter. The ship is now in the process of maneuvering to approach the unloading dock.
Importantly, the General Directorate of Maritime Affairs issued a statement confirming that the “MILDRED,” despite carrying a significant load of 170,000 tons of iron ore, sustained no damage, and there were no indications of environmental pollution in the vicinity.
