ICCInternational Maritime Bureau (IMB) has posted on its website updated data regarding the piracy and armed robbery figures as follows (updated on January 21):
Worldwide Incidents 2014: 12 reported incidents
The main aim of the IMB (Piracy Reporting Centre) PRC is to raise awareness within the shipping industry, which includes the shipmaster, ship-owner, insurance companies, traders, etc, of the areas of high risk associated with piratical attacks or specific ports and anchorages associated with armed robberies on board ships.
IMB gives the following general advice to Master transiting / calling at ports of piratical/ armed robbery:

3.Procedures given inBMP4 while transiting high risk areasof Somali piracy.
Last week,the IMB piracy reporting centre issuedits annual global report on piracy and armed robbery for 2013 concluding that decrease in somali piracy has caused significant drop in global piracy figures. Accoding to the report, piracy at sea has reached its lowest levels in six years, with 264 attacks recorded worldwide in 2013, a 40% drop since Somali piracy peaked in 2011.15 incidents were reported off Somalia in 2013, down from 75 in 2012, and 237 in 2011. On January 18th, 2014, the first pirate attack of the year reported which ended up successfully with EUNAVFOR cooperation. EU Naval Force Somalia Operation Atalanta flagship FS Siroco in cooperation with Japanese assets released the crew of a Dhow that was suspected to have been used as pirate mother-ship. The flagship apprehended 5 suspected pirates believed to be responsible for the attack on an oil tanker in the Gulf of Aden. |
