The grounded container ship TS Taipei split on two and spilled fuel off Keelung, Taiwan. The vessel suffered damages from the storm and hull cracked, spilling sufficient quantity of oil from ruptured bunker tanks. The ship’s wreck is on risk from capsizing, which can cause additional pollution from spillage of more heavy fuel and hazardous materials from the containers on board.
The Taiwan’s Environmental Protection Department warned that such scenario can cause real environmental disaster for the region and sent emergency response team to the site of accident. Two rescue boats, equipped with oil collection booms are working at the scene of pollution site, collecting the spilled oil.
A new video of the TS Taipei shipwreck shows the extent of the disaster that is unfolding in northern Taiwan as the vessel continues to break up and spill fuel and containers into the sea.
