TotalEnergies Marine Fuels has marked a significant milestone by supplying its first 100% biofuel bunker, B100, on August 5 in Singapore.
According to TotalEnergies, this supply aligns with the decarbonization goals of the global shipping industry and utilized the IMO Type II chemical bunker tanker MAPLE to transfer 700 metric tons of Used Cooking Oil Methyl Ester (UCOME) biofuel to the Pure Car and Truck Carrier (PCTC) Glovis Cosmos, owned by Hyundai Glovis.
The UCOME biodiesel is a second-generation, waste-based fuel sourced from Southeast Asia, certified under the International Sustainability & Carbon Certification (ISCC) system.
Previously, TotalEnergies Marine Fuels offered biofuel bunkering operations that blended VLSFO (Very Low Sulfur Fuel Oil) with up to 30% UCOME-based biofuel.
Some more benefits of biofuels as presented Bill Stamatopoulos, Global Business Development Director, VeriFuel, during the 2023 SAFETY4SEA Limassol Forum are:
- Four-year experience with successful trials since 2019
- No CAPEX is required
- Improved CO2 emission factor
- Limited safety risk as it is not toxic (like ammonia) and the flash point is always higher than 100 degrees, so it meets the SOLAS requirement
- Can use the existing bunkering infrastructure
- Mix with fossil fuels a.k.a. “drop in”
The recent delivery, composed entirely of biofuel, has the potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 80% to 90% on a well-to-wake basis.
Louise Tricoire, Senior Vice President of Aviation and Marine Fuels at TotalEnergies, expressed satisfaction with the safe and smooth delivery, emphasizing the company’s commitment to supporting the shipping industry’s decarbonization efforts and innovation in sustainable solutions.
The company has also conducted biofuel bunker deliveries in France and the Amsterdam-Rotterdam-Antwerp (ARA) region, while leveraging digitalization to enhance its bunker delivery reporting system for improved safety and efficiency.
