Guatemalan and US Coast Guard officials collaborated to achieve the largest cocaine seizure in Guatemala’s history. The drugs were hidden in false-bottomed parts of a Tanzania-flagged ship.
The cargo carrier was intercepted off Guatemala and was taken to Puerto Quetzal. The authorities detected the drugs after conducting an investigation on the ship.

The officials are still conducting the inspection on the ship and it is likely that the amount can increase. The cargo carrier arrived in port on Monday May 7, and it still remains there. A few days before the incident, the ship had stopped about 300 nautical miles from the coast.
Thirteen persons were onboard the ship when the incident happened, and citizens from Colombia, Ecuador and Peru were detained.
The drugs on the ship, which was heading to Ensenada, Mexico, from Ecuador, are believed to were headed to North America.
