Three Somali pirates have been killed following an unsuccessful attack on a Kenyan naval patrol off the Kenyan coast.
A fourth pirate drowned while trying to escape the aftermath of the botched assault.
Spokesman for the Kenyan defence ministry Bogita Ongeri said the attack occurred late on Friday night in the waters off Kilifi town, north of Mombasa.
Full details will be released after the captian of the Kenyan naval vessel releases a report said Ongeri.
Pirates have extended their area of operation as they seek to avoid areas patrolled by an international naval mission.
The Defence Ministry insists the attack and subsequent rearguard happened well inside Kenya waters.
Ongeri said the incident showed that the government of Kenya will not back down or be cowed by the pirates.
