‘Tavaha’ is a nordic expression for taking care of the ocean, and is also the title of a new, short documentary about the saving of the European seas. The new film provides us with insight and inspiration regarding the oceanic conservation around Europe from the Mediterranean to the icy waters of northern Atlantic.
European seas are in crisis. The devastation of life-sustaining ecosystems is a fact resulting from waste, pollution and climate change. Yet, an army of scientists and activists around the most civilized continent in the world are contributing daily to better the chances of survival for marine environments.
In this regard, the documentary meets and follows grass-root activists, as well as professional wildlife conservationists, exploring the answer to the questions: Who is going to save our seas? Why? How?
The inspiring film is produced by Finn and Fauna Productions in cooperation with the environmental collective Nordic Ocean Watch, aiming to highlight the can-do attitude of European activists working with marine environments.
“Tavaha” comes from the saying “Ta Vare På Havet (Take care of the ocean)”, which to some is a nordic version of the greeting “Aloha!”.
In 2016, the EU adopted an agenda for the future of oceans to improve international governance of the seas and promote blue economy. This was encompassed by a strategy to boost growth, €350 million investment in research and, recently, a 23-steps commitment to improve the conditions at sea.
