On January 2, the Vietnamese navy rescued the tanker PETROLIMEX 11, which had been drifting uncontrollably off the coast of Khanh Hoa in Vietnam.
The vessel experienced engine failure on January 1 while traveling about 20 nautical miles from Cam Ranh Bay, leaving it inoperable and causing it to drift. The captain of PETROLIMEX 11 sent out a distress signal and requested assistance, informing authorities that there were 25 crew members aboard.
Despite the hazardous weather conditions, with waves reaching 6 to 7 meters, the naval crew was able to reach the drifting ship after several hours of effort. Furthermore, upon arrival the crew provided medical care to the ship’s crew and established a towing line.
The vessel was then safely towed to an anchorage in the Tuy Phong district of Binh Thuan Province. The entire rescue operation took over 12 hours.
