In its weekly report for 29 September -5 October, ReCAAP ISC informed of one incident of piracy against ship in Asia. The CAT 4 incident occurred on 30 September onboard a tanker while anchored in the South China Sea.
The incident involves the Singaporean-flagged tanker Champion Prince, while approximately 22.4 nm northeast of Tanjung Berakit, Pulau Bintan, Indonesia, in the South China Sea.
While at anchor in the early morning hours of 30 September, an unknown number of perpetrators boarded the ship. The perpetrators broke the padlocks of the paint store, emergency generator room and Suez room.
As a result, two spare starting motors of emergency generator, spanners and screwdrivers from the emergency generator room were missing.
There was no confrontation between the perpetrators and crew.
The weekly report includes also an incident reported outside Asia, involving the Singaporean-flagged petroleum/chemical tanker Nord Steady, while at Bong Mining Company (BMC) Pier, Monrovia, Liberia, West Africa.
While at berth in the early morning hours of 1st October, the duty watchkeeping officer sighted a perpetrator at the forecastle area.
The alarm was raised; and the perpetrator jumped overboard and escaped.
A search shortly after found no further sightings of the perpetrator onboard. A ship-to-ship (STS) messenger rope was missing.
There was neither damage to the ship nor injury to crew.
