As ILO informs, the participation of more women in leadership roles is a major field of the global fight to equality. Besides, there are still indicators ringing the bell for the global community to shed its efforts for enabling more women in core business positions.

Recently, shipping stakeholders submitted a paper to the IMO proposing the addition of a new output under the work program on Fair treatment of seafarers detained on suspicion of committing maritime crimes. The paper highlights that in some cases the master and the crew may not be aware of their vessel being involved in smuggling activities

WISTA Hellas conducted its Annual Forum on November 5, focusing on the sanctions that are being imposed today, the development of digitalization, as well as the role of women in shipping and the importance of boosting their presence in the sector. 

In order to boost women's leadership in the maritime and ocean business community, the World's Ocean Council (WOC) and the Women's International Shipping & Tradding Association (WISTA) are about to collaborate and sign an MoU, on 20 November at the annual WOC Sustainable Ocean Summit 2019 in Paris.

IMO’s World Maritime theme for 2019 'Empowering women in the Maritime Community' has featured prominently in events at the London International Shipping Week, taking place from 9 to 13 September. Specifically, a seminar co-hosted by Inmarsat and WISTA international on September 10 explored the theme of Diversity and Digitalisation in the Shipping Industry.

On the sidelines of ​Nor-Shipping exhibition last week in Oslo, IMO hosted a special event to highlight some of the challenges and the solutions around encouraging women to take up seafaring roles. This comes in line with IMO's enhanced efforts during the last year to empower women in the maritime community.

More than 130 representatives of the shipping community from Greece and the Mediterranean countries gathered at the Hotel Costa Navarino, Pylos Messinia, from 23 to 25 May, for WISTA MED conference 2019. Discussions on the conference's theme - 'Turbulence or fair winds in the Med?' - were led by 21 speakers.

Despina Panayiotou Theodosiou, CEO at TOTOTHEO MARITIME & President at WISTA International, defines what sustainability means for shipping, referring to its three pillars – economic, social and environmental – and addressing also key steps to take for action.

Key players from the Greek and international shipping community will come together for the WISTA MED 2019 Conference at the Costa Navarino Hotel in Pylos. The Conference will take place from 23 to 25 May. The theme of the conference will be 'Turbulence or fair winds in the Med', and it will be discussed and analyzed by four panels of industry experts.
