As part of their commitment to make maritime trade more sustainable, Norwegian Wilhelmsen Ship Management (WSM) enforced a new criteria in their vendor selection process to reduce plastic debris at the world's oceans.

In cooperation with Airbus, Norwegian shipping company Wilhelmsen launched this week a shore-to-ship Singapore pilot project, marking the first deployment of drone technology in real-time port conditions, delivering a variety of items to working vessels at anchorage. 

Wilhelmsen Ships Service has moved to an agreement with Hitachi High-Tech, to offer the company's handheld XRF sulphur content analysers to the maritime market. This technology helps vessel crews test the sulphur content in their fuel in detail. Hitachi High-Tech’s XRF spectrometers offer upstream and downstream quality control, requiring little sample prep, minimal training and providing almost instantaneous, verifiable results.

Moss Maritime, in cooperation with Equinor, Wilhelmsen and DNV-GL, have developed a design for a Liquefied Hydrogen bunker vessel. The vessel design comes at a time when hydrogen is developing into a viable solution. The LH2 bunker vessel has cargo capacity of 9000 m³, with a cargo containment system aimed to enhance insulation performance and meet strict safety requirements.

Hyper-connected systems that integrate human, physical and digital environments, carry risk of potential compromise. And one of the simplest ways to break a secure force field is human weakness. That's why, Wilhelmsen launched a cyber security training for the crew, that focuses on limiting the risks of being cyber-attacked.

Wilhelmsen Ship Management has signed two agreements that will establish the operational and regulatory framework in autonomous shipping. The first agreement is about the rise of a safety management system, which is called “safety management system agreement”. Whereas the second one focuses on the development of future competence, called “competence agreement”.

Norwegian maritime industry group Wilhelmsen abandoned the acquisition of the US-based Drew Marine Technical Services, after the US District Court for the District of Columbia announced that it will grant the Federal Trade Commission’s motion for an injunction to block the transaction, on 21 July.

Wilhelmsen Ships Service will cooperate with Airbus in the Agency by Air project. This project aims to test shore-to-ship drone delivery services at the Port of Singapore. The project will be launched during the third quarter of 2018. The two-week shore-to-ship pilot trial will begin by delivering parcels to vessels anchored off the coast of Singapore.

The Competition and Consumer Commission of Singapore issued a provisional Statement of Decision to Wilhelmsen and Drew Marine, finding that the proposed acquisition by WMS of control over DMTS may result in a substantial lessening of market competition for the supply of marine water treatment chemicals in Singapore.

Norwegian companies Wilhelmsen and Kongsberg are cooperating and have created an autonomous shipping joint venture, called "Massterly". The new company will offer services for autonomous ships, including design and development, control systems, logistics services and vessel operations. The new company will start operations from August 2018.
