Meriaura Group presented its plans to create a zero-waste fleet in the future. For this reason, in the end of 2018, the group announced a research cooperation with the Finnish Transport Safety Agency (Trafi), aiming to reduce ship-generated waste. The final aspiration of the group is to make its fleet the least waste producing fleet by the end of 2020. 

During the Nor-Shipping Conference, Wärtsilä presented its development work on a smart concept for onboard water and waste systems. The work consists of the latest environmental technology and expertise, along with real-time data collection and digital modelling. 

Mozambique is expected to become the world’s third largest natural gas exporter by 2023, bringing a projected $39 billion to the Mozambican economy over the next 20 years and creating over 700,000 jobs by 2035, according to data provided by UN Environment.

Following announcement that the European Parliament and Council have reached a political agreement on the new measures to reduce marine litter, the Council also endorsed a reform which is expected to ensure the provision of adequate waste reception facilities in ports and clarify the rules to make sure member states interpret them in a more uniform manner.

On October the 9th, the Transport Committee of the European Parliament adopted the Meissner report on the Port Reception Facilities and gave a mandate to the Rapporteur to start negotiations with the Council to finalize the text of the new law. In light of this, the Port of Rotterdam supports the view that minimization of waste discharges in the sea has plenty of benefits.

On 18 October, 13 partners from 6 EU Member States conducted the kick-off meeting of the European LOOP-Ports project in Valencia, aimed at easing the transition to a more circular economy in the port sector, where products, materials and resources are maintained in the economy for as long as possible.
