EU anti-piracy fight with warships must go on

EU Committee urged more aid for Somalia The European Union should continue to use warships to tackle pirates off the coast of Somalia following a reduction in the rate of kidnappings, a parliamentary committee has said.Operation Atalanta, which also involves putting armed guards on ships, has been in place since 2008.The Lords EU Committee said hostage-taking had more than halved in the last year and said funding should go beyond a planned cut-off at the end of 2014.It also urged more aid for Somalia.Kidnappings involving shipping travelling past the coast of the east African country - which has not had a stable government since 1991 - have become rife in recent years.One of the highest-profile cases was that of British couple Paul and Rachel Chandler, who were taken hostage for more than a year after being held while on a round-the-world sailing trip.'Not invulnerable' In 2008 the EU set up Operation Atalanta, its first naval task force, to try to defeat the problem. Pirates are suspected of hijacking an under Omani-flagged dhow HNLMS Evertsen, the flagship of the NATO counter-piracy Operation Ocean Shield, today, handed 7 of Somali piracy suspects over to the Navy of Oman. The suspects and evidence were handed to the Omani warship Al RNOV Muazzar (C32).The suspects were intercepted on Friday June 29, when the Dutch navy ship crew freed a hijacked dhow.In close consultation between the Dutch Public Prosecution Service, the Ministries of Defence and Foreign Affairs and the Omani authorities, the Gulf state decided to suspected pirates to take over for prosecution. Plans to build more warships and increase its presence i The Iranian navy has announced plans to build more warships and increase its presence in international waters.Navy commander Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari said the deployments would protect Iranian cargo ships around the world, in particular in the Gulf of Aden and the northern part of the Indian Ocean, according to state news agency Irna.The navy wanted to guard Iranian ships from Somali pirates, the report said.State-owned Press TV quoted Sayyari as saying: "Our presence in international waters is aimed at safeguarding the interests of the Islamic Republic and strengthening military power to defend Iran." The ships visit is a high point of defence exchange After a gap of six years, an armada of Indian warships would dock at the Chinese port city of Shanghai tomorrow to begin a five-day goodwill tour in a show of camaraderie in spite of misgivings about each other's rise.
