The Global Maritime Forum gives an insight in major issues that seem to affect the shipping industry on a global scale. It is based on research between senior maritime stakeholders from more than 50 countries, and their perceptions on the impact, likelihood, and preparedness on a number of issues potentially affecting the global maritime industry.

The Global Maritime Issues Monitor 2018 sheds lights on digitalization and new technologies. New digital technologies are challenging conventional business models and are opening up new opportunities, however with increasing digitalization the cyber-risk becomes bigger as well. The possible impact of cyber crimes and data theft is significant to the maritime industry, as experts include it in the top three 'most likely to happen in the next 10 years'.

Northwest Seaport Alliance's second set of super-post-Panamax cranes from Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries is arriving. Namely, they are expected to be in Puget Sound by March 5, on board the Zhen Hua 31. When they arrive at Husky Terminal, they will be offloaded on rails to the dock, then commissioned over the next few months to be operational by late spring/early summer.

As Guardia Costiera posted, its crewmembers began removing fuel from the Turkish cargo vessel called 'Efe Murat' off Bari, Italy. Up to now, there have been no reports concerning pollution. Yet, it is alleged that the vessel has been holed in several places and is taking on water.

A group of tourists filed a lawsuit against the tour boat operator Lava Ocean Tours Inc., after its vessel 'Hot Spot' was hit by a lava bomb during a tour off Hawaii's Big Island in July 2018, injuring several passengers onboard. 

Spectrum of the Seas is nearing completion, as it was floated out of the dry dock on February 25, 2019, to start the next phase of construction at Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany. Spectrum will be delivered in April 2019, and will be operating in the Chinese market. Two tugboats, with 9,000 horsepower each, pulled the ship out of the dry dock.

Months after the frigate's collision in Fjord, many operations have been made aiming to prevent the vessel from sinking. After the attempts, the Royal Norwegian Navy conducts an operation to partially raise the sunken vessel, starting from February 26.

During the 2019 SMART4SEA Conference, Andreas Chrysostomou, Chief Strategy Officer, TOTOTHEO, said the near future is expected to form a new era for shipping through technological advancements. Mr. Chrysostomou explained that new society realities are calling upon a new “re-thought” model in shipping. The new digital era in connection with new thinking in relation to enforceable instruments can provide the way forward.

Japanese shipping company “K” Line has joined forces with 'non-destructive testing' company Technos Mihara Corporation on a development project using an innovative method for ship hull inspection and maintenance by a drone and image analysis system.
