The International Transport Forum 2019 Summit on ‘Transport Connectivity for Regional Integration’ took place from 22 to 24 May 2019 in Leipzig, Germany. As the forum said, maritime transport has undergone major changes over the last decade, with overcapacity, environmental issues and employment, presenting new challenges.

EPIRB or Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon is a safety device carried by a vessel to alert search and rescue services, allowing them to quickly locate you in the event of an emergency. When activated it transmits a coded message on the 406 MHz distress frequency which is monitored by the COSPAS-SARSAT satellite system.

Hundreds of radar images taken by satellites, via the Copernicus Sentinel-1 mission from 2016 to 2018 have been compressed into a single image, depicting maritime traffic in the English Channel. Two Copernicus Sentinel-1 satellites carry radar instruments, which can see through clouds and rain, and in the dark, to image Earth’s surface. 

UK satellites to boost monitoring of shipping activity

Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd. confirmed the successful launch of two satellites, launched into a 580km sun-synchronous orbit onboard the PSLV launch vehicle, which are expected to ease monitoring of marine environment and provide direct radar ship detection information.

How Indonesia is tracking illegal fishing activity in real time

Partnering with Google, Indonesian Minister of Fisheries and Marine Affairs, Susi Pudjiastuti, is catching illegal fishing activity in real time, after thousands of vessels’ locations were revealed online. Previously, most of the Indonesian fishing activity had been invisible.
