Bulk carrier grounded in Delaware River, USA

The bulk carrier ‘Strategic Explorer’ ran aground on January 21 on Delaware river, which is located in Wilmington USA. The vessel is, for the time being, anchored after its unmooring. The vessel was anchored after its unmooring and placed in Wilmington from January 17. The vessel was refloated with the help of at least two tugs on January 22, at around 06.00 hours (UTC).

USCG proceeds to formal investigation on capsized fishing vessel

The US Coast Guard, announced on January 16, the official marine casualty investigation of the fishing vessel Mary B I, which capsized off Newport, Oregon on January 9. The capsized vessel led to three fishermen loosing their lives, according to the Coast Guard’s statement. 

Vessel grounded at Mississippi River

The US Coast Guard responded to a grounded vessel in the Lower Mississippi River near New Orleans, on Friday, January 4. The UK-flagged Anglo Alexandria had grounded in the Mississippi River at mile marker 3.5. The Mississippi River has reopened after the refloating of the bulk carrier.

Cruise ship hits mooring dolphin at Mallory Square, Key West

The 691-foot-long cruise ship Silver Spirit crashed into a mooring dolphin in Key West, on November 28, due to heavy winds. Because of the crash, Mallory Square will be unusable for three months. The ship was not significantly damaged, while no injuries were reported.

Improper berthing arrangements led to Helsinki Bridge allision

US NTSB published its report on the allision of the container ship ‘Helsinki Bridge’, with the Black Falcon Cruise Terminal on December 6, 2017. According to the report, the Massachusetts Port Authority did not provide proper berthing arrangements during ongoing construction at the Conley Container Terminal.

USCG medevacs Captain from motor vessel

The US Coast Guard medevaced a 49-year-old captain from a motor vessel, approximately eight miles offshore of Galveston, Texas, on December first. According to the crew, the captain was presenting symptoms of heart attack.

The NTSB issued its ‘Safer Seas’ annual report providing an overview of key lessons to be learned from the most major maritime casualties, noting that many of the issues noted in last year’s reports were recurring topics, such as fatigue, poor bridge resource management, and distraction. The 41 marine accidents resulted in loss of life, injuries, and significant property damage.

17 rescued after yacht collides with sportfisher off Imperial Beach

The crew of the 332-foot yacht, Attessa IV collided with the 65-foot sportfisher, Prowler, about nine miles offshore of Imperial Beach, causing extensive damage to the starboard quarter of the sportfisher and multiple injuries. The cause of the collision is under investigation.

Dozens dead as Hurricane Florence hits USA

Hurricane Florence hit North and South Carolina during Friday, September 14, leaving at least 15 dead and thousands of homes damaged across these states. Florence is now more week, but it is still expected to rain up to 10 inches of rain in North Carolina. Until now, over 900 people have been rescued from floodwaters.
