Despite the prospect of heavy tariffs on goods from China, imports at the US' major retail container ports are expected to grow steadily throughout the summer of 2018, according to the monthly Global Port Tracker report released by the National Retail Federation and Hackett Associates.

The Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach are offering seed money to foster the development of new goods-movement technologies that will improve air quality, as part of the ports’ Technology Advancement Program. The Ports’ TAP is focused on clean technologies specifically for maritime related mobile sources that operate in and around ports.

NOAA launched a decision support tool for super-sized ships, coming through the recently-expanded Panama Canal, to enter the Miami seaport more safely. The tool reduces accidents by more than 50%, increases the amount of cargo ships can carry, reduces transit delays for commercial traffic, enhances recreational activities, and improves hazardous spill response. 

Steel and aluminum imports through the NWSA and Seattle-Tacoma International Airport surpassed $2.5 billion in value in 2017. Those imports either go directly to Washington-based manufacturers or are processed through logistics services and routed to other destinations in the US.

The South Carolina Ports Authority welcomed two new ship-to-shore cranes at the Wando Welch Terminal, to further enhance the handling of neo-Panamax vessels. The cranes arrived at the port just a day prior to the beginning of Charleston Harbor Deepening Project construction. 

The Northwest Seaport Alliance ordered eight new super-post-Panamax cranes from Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries in China through a competitive bid process, as no container cranes currently are manufactured in the US. Four cranes arrived Friday and four more cranes will arrive in 2019.

Imports at US’ major retail container ports are expected to grow a 4.9% during the first half of 2018 compared with the same period a year earlier, according to the monthly Global Port Tracker report by the National Retail Federation and Hackett Associates. 

The Port of New York and New Jersey announced that cargo volumes for 2017 surpassed the existing annual cargo volume record set in 2015 by 5.3%. During 2017, the port handled 6,710,817 TEUs compared to 6,371,720 TEUs handled in 2015.

After ten years of review, contractors for the US Army Corps of Engineers initiated the Jacksonville Harbor Deepening project to deepen the shipping channel to a depth of 47 feet. The Dutra Group was awarded a contract for the construction of the project’s first three mile segment.

As the Port of Philadelphia’s $392 million Main Channel Deepening Project reaches completion and cargo volumes are surging, the port expects next month the first two of the four super post-Panamax cranes due at the Port’s Packer Avenue Marine Terminal.
